Quandary....

I was listening while Prerna was talking to her husband on phone. Prerna is an office colleague…. bright, ambitious and articulate. She is a modern day woman who keeps everything before work..and believe that Husband and wife have an equal responsibility whether it is in rearing a child or earning a bread. That day while coming to work she noticed that her son was having high temperature. She gave him a Crocin tablet and told her Aaayii to take care of him…She called her Aaayii in noon to enquire about her son…while she was leaving for the day, her boss reminded her about the party due in the evening where they had to meet a business delegation and he wanted her to come along with him..She couldn’t resist it, as that meeting was important and as it goes a happy boss means a happy job!! Being a working lady has its own hassles, as she can not think about her home always if she has to climb the ladder of success. After all it is also fair that husband too has an equal responsibility of raising the child as the child is his also.

For a moment, this propelled me into the thought of one of my office colleague Prakash and his wife Neha. She had a decent job when Prakash married her and he wanted her to carry on with the job as he felt that she will get bore in the flat. Neha was also all eager and happy to go ahead with her profession but all her perspective changed abruptly when she became a mother. She insisted that she must quit the job so that she can be with the child all along, tending him, feeding him, playing with him, seeing him grow up. Here for once Prakash insisted that she can do all this without leaving the job..she would not relent..Do you want me to earn to run the household? Prakash..she was almost at the brink of crying…”No my dear I only want you to be engaged” he coaxed her…“Yes, I am engaged with my child and you must be happy with my decision”, she said with a finality in her voice.

Leaning back on my chair staring outside the glass window I am in quandary unable to find an answer to the contrasting view points of the two ladies on a rather similar point.

I will ask my wife to be engaged with my child rather than being a working lady, i have learned this from my own mother & wat she has done in life, I m sure my wife will not even do half of it but still i will give her example of my mom because proper upbringing of ur own child is itself an achievement

i think neha will be less stressfull in this situation. (not because she is my future wife :-) ) but she is going with her aspiration. and in 2days world, working lady has to spend more than 12 hours specailly in IT,banking sectors. there is no time 2 look at self..when she will look at her child ??? gone days of 10 to 5 pm jobs !!

eventually u can manage only one at a time..either child or ur job. otherwise person will become streched in both & may loose temper ...my personal thinking is wife should look after her child atleast till time baby is small ..after 2/3 yrs she can again continue with job..if she want...
there are many comapnies which r recurting/preffering such womnes even after long breaks for 2 reason...1.) they are more experienced 2.) they r more reliable & safe 3.) and not like job hopper like 2days freshers...
still its individual choice !! & ofcourse BOTH shld happy on the decison (thats MORE imp !!)

I think prerna is right when she is being ambititious. Being a mother does not mean that the wife sacrifice her own career. But to be a working mother requires a lot of energy and a great support system. If her husband and family supports her , i do not see a reason why she should sacrifice her career. For example in the given scenario of son being ill her husband can take care of the sick son that day as she has an imp meeting which she cannot miss , while she can take a leave other day to look after the son. basically what I want to imply is that if the lady has great support system i donot see reason why she should not pursue her career actively

Thanks Prakash & Meghana for your inputs, yeah I accept there are certain factors which influence our decision such as situation, priority and time and it is upon an individual how they perceive and react on the same.
